At the Neurodiversity Resource of the Panhandle, our mission has always been to build bridges—between understanding and action, between awareness and inclusion. This fall, we took another meaningful step toward that goal through an exciting partnership with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office to provide 250 sensory support bags to officers across our community.
These sensory bags are designed to help law enforcement officers respond more effectively and compassionately to individuals with sensory sensitivities, autism, ADHD, and other neurodiverse conditions during high-stress encounters. By providing practical tools and education, we’re empowering officers to create safer, calmer interactions where communication and understanding come first.

What’s Inside Each Bag?
Each sensory bag is packed with tools that can make a life-changing difference in a moment of crisis:
- Noise-canceling headphones to reduce overwhelming sounds.
- Sunglasses to ease overstimulation from bright lights.
- Visual communication cards in English and Spanish to help bridge language and communication gaps.
- Fidget tools and sensory toys to provide comfort and self-regulation.
These items may seem simple, but in the right moment, they can turn a potentially stressful encounter into one of calm and connection.
Building Understanding Through Training
In addition to distributing the sensory bags, we also worked with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office to provide officers with education about neurodiversity—how sensory sensitivities can affect behavior, how to recognize signs of distress, and how small adjustments can make a big difference. This partnership represents a shared commitment to building trust and safety within our community.
Made Possible Through Generous Support
This initiative was funded through a grant from the St. Joe Community Foundation, whose dedication to local impact continues to help us expand programs that make a tangible difference for neurodiverse individuals and their families. We are deeply grateful for their support and belief in our mission.
A Community That Cares
With every bag distributed, we’re not just providing supplies—we’re sending a message of compassion, inclusion, and understanding. Together with the Walton County Sheriff’s Office, we’re helping to create a community where every individual, regardless of ability, is seen, heard, and supported.
This is what inclusion looks like in action.
