What is the typical profile of a camper?

Unplugged Adventures serves youth, ages 10-16, with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder. Unplugged Adventures participants generally enjoy the out-of-doors, are energetic and active, and thrive in a small group environment.

Most Unplugged Adventure participants are high functioning and struggle with issues such as impulsivity, disorganization, oppositionality, inattention, challenges with social skills, etc. Some participants may have additional diagnoses such as Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourettes, Autism Spectrum Disorder Level 1, or Generalized Anxiety Disorder, among others. Although participants may have experienced lowered self-esteem and academic frustration prior to attending Unplugged Adventures, they are essentially well-adjusted individuals.

In order to provide a safe, effective environment for participants and staff we do not accept students with active suicidal ideation/attempts, psychotic symptoms, acute/chronic violence, or active substance abuse issues. Participants with significant behavioral challenges are discouraged from applying. Medical conditions such as diabetes (insulin-dependent), epilepsy, cardiac conditions, or other conditions may prevent students from being accepted.

Unplugged Adventures welcomes youth diagnosed with ADHD and/or learning disabilities (and their siblings) of any race, religion, sexual orientation or identity, national or ethnic origin, and disability (assuming the disability permits safe participation in the essential activities of Unplugged Adventures courses as currently defined).

Meet Our Director, Lisa Apple!

Lisa Apple, Camp Director

I’ve lived and worked in this area for 22 years and have been a Registered Nurse for nearly three decades, with the majority of my experience focused on working with children. As a mom to grown children, a proud grandmother, and the parent of a wonderful 15-year-old daughter with neurodevelopmental special needs, my heart is deeply rooted in the well-being and joy of kids of all abilities.

Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as a Camp Nurse, Health Director, and most recently, Director of a Special Needs camp—roles that have brought me so much fulfillment and connection. I’ve seen firsthand how camp can change lives, build confidence, and create lifelong friendships.

That’s why I’m thrilled to be launching a local overnight camp right here in our community—designed for our kids, with their unique needs and strengths in mind. Our first camp is set for June 2025, and I can’t wait to share this adventure with you and your family!
